Youth in Harmony

The Vision of the Barbershop Harmony Society is to lead the cause of encouraging choral music in our schools, our homes and in our communities. With this purpose in mind, in late 1998, the Sunshine District launched the Youth Music Festival Program, a major effort to further this vision by introducing barbershop harmony, an original American art form of four-part a cappella singing, to the students and music educators of every school throughout the State of Florida. The Sunshine District is proud of the fact that it has launched the largest music education partnership program for students in Florida’s history at no cost to the State, the schools or the students. The Youth Harmony Workshop program has been a great success. To date over 30,000 students and 1,600 music educators have participated in the Youth Harmony Workshop program in Florida alone. The program, in cooperation with Sweet Adelines International, has spread across the entire country. Many current top level quartet and chorus members had their start at one of these workshops.

As far back as 1997, the Heralds recognized that youth would become an underserved constituency of the arts.  The funding of music arts education in secondary schools has greatly diminished, creating an opportunity for local funding and music talent to step up and be heard.  So, for the fourteenth consecutive year, the Heralds will produce and conduct vocal music educational workshops for high school youth and their choral directors during the grant period at no cost to the schools or the attendees.  In collaboration with area music educators and other music organizations, particularly the Gulf-to-Bay Sweet Adelines Chorus, the Heralds will reach out to this community need, while also building an exciting source of new audience and potential future community singers. The popularity of these annual Youth Harmony Workshop programs continues to grow.  Recent workshops through 2015 have filled the venues to capacity with an average of nearly 650 enthusiastic girls and boys from 32 area schools participating along with their choral directors who concur in praising the value of the workshops.  Moreover, as those directors return to their own classrooms, they share new insights with their other students.  Very few activities today can enrich young lives as easily, since singing acappella harmony requires no other equipment – just learned skills and the educational opportunity.  The demonstrated growing attendance and the enthusiasm among youth for acappella singing make us highly confident as we extend this outreach.  A third venue was added in 2009 to the existing two in Hillsborough and Pinellas: more students are waiting to attend.

Youth Harmony Workshops serve as a great introduction to Barbershop Harmony, and close-harmony a cappella singing. A typical workshop will see students from several different schools gathered together, rehearsing and performing age-appropriate arrangements, conducted by top-notch clinicians, and having tons of fun! These workshops are held all around the United States and Canada at little to no cost to the students.
